AS Art and Design

  • What is A Level Art & Design?

A Level Art and Design will give you the opportunity to develop your own artistic style. You will look research a visit galleries displaying a wide range of historical and contemporary art works. You will be expected to develop independent investigations from a range of different themes.

  • How does it differ from GCSE?

It differs from GCSE in that you will be given the opportunity to develop your own work more like a professional artist would. You are expected and will be given more freedom to develop your own personal investigations in response to a theme set by your teacher.

  • How is the subject assessed?

At AS Level: 50% Coursework Portfolio

                    50 % Externally Set Assignment

At A2 Level: 50% Personal Investigation

                    50 % Externally Set Assignment

  • Apart from lessons, how much time is needed to study this subject?

The A-level Art student is expected to spend at least 6 hours outside of lessons on their work. There are tasks that will have to be conducted outside of lesson time, especially when researching different themes and artists.

  • What resources will I need?

You will need a range of materials before starting the course. You will need resource yourself with basic artistic materials, including acrylic and gouache paint, charcoal and oil pastels. You will be given a list at the beginning of the course. It is advised to resource yourself effectively and this will support your success on the course.
