Reporting to Parents and Carers about Student Progress

Reporting to Parents and Carers

Parents and Carers can download the following information as a pdf document by clicking on the link to the right.

Further information can be accessed by contacting a.betts@harrischaffordhundred.org.uk

The following explains how the Academy will report formally to parents and carers on student progress during the rest of the academic year 2014/2015 and shows the dates on which parents and carers should expect to receive data and written comments and also be invited into school to discuss progress.

These dates differ according to year group because parents may be in a better position at these times to help us all influence students to better achievement. For example, year 11 and year 13 parents and carers are invited to attend parents’ evenings in January and February respectively in order to discuss results achieved in the mock examinations which are taken in January. This leaves time for teaching staff, support staff and parents and carers to work together with students to address any weaknesses or areas for development evident in mock examination performance before final examinations are taken in May and June.

Data Reports

Data reports are prepared every half term for all students and reflect the current progress of pupils. In years 7 and 8 teachers assess where pupils currently stand in terms of their progress towards their end of year 9 target. In years 10 to 13, teachers use professional judgement and current assessments to predict what students are likely to achieve in final examinations given their current level of performance. In year 9 GCSE subjects follow the procedure for years 10 to 13 and non GCSE subjects follow the year 7 and 8 procedure.

Targets

Data is compared with target grade on all data reports and target grades are often mentioned in written reports and in discussion at parents’ evenings. The Academy target grades are not subjective or based on effort, attendance or a teacher’s opinion, for example. Targets are set using a calculation based on prior achievement and include high challenge – much higher than national expectation. They are designed to motivate and hold accountable all stakeholders in a student’s progress and achievement.

Questions and Concerns

If parents and carers have any questions about any of the above then this can be taken up initially with the learning guide for students in years 7 to 10, the mentor for students in year 11 and the  tutor for students in years 12 and 13. If parents and carers’ concerns are not dealt with in this way then further contact should be made with Andrew Betts (Assistant Principal) at a.betts@harrischaffordhundred.org.uk or via the website ‘contacts’ page.

Key Dates

Dates of parents’ evenings, publication of data reports and written reports are reproduced below.

Future Developments in Data and Target Setting

There has been much talk in the press about new methods of measuring student progress. The Academy is developing new methods and changes will be communicated in good time to meet requirements and produce the best outcomes for students.
