PLEASE RETWEET: with 36,000 families at our schools in London and Essex, we want to supply food parcels for those in need (on top of free school meals which we’re already doing). We’ll fully fund this but URGENTLY need a supermarket chain to help.

23/03/20

Thanks for letting us know, we’ll let the year head know who can investigate further. If you do experience any issues they are your first port of call.

Thank you to the teachers and staff in schools across the country this morning - you are part of our vital front line in the fight against coronavirus. Help schools to focus on the children who need a place most, and keep your kids at home if you can. https://t.co/Zp4lHO7gSH

MFL Workshops by Dr. Gianfranco Conti

This CPD course for MFL teachers will provide delegates with a deeper understanding of the cognitive mechanisms involved in language acquisition and processing and will offer a wide range of evidence-based instructional strategies for accelerating learning.

Our focus will be on modelling and enhancing listening and speaking instruction, explicitly integrating the two skills. Gianfranco will share and demonstrate a substantive repertoire of classroom strategies which are readily applicable to a variety of languages and topics.

Workshop 1 - Listening Skills Instruction: Teaching Listening Bottom-Up

In this workshop Gianfranco will provide a wide range of evidence-based strategies and techniques aimed at modelling language through aural input.

In his approach, listening instruction, both unidirectional and interpersonal, primes and prepares the language learner for oral production through a focus on micro-listening skills such as:

  • Decoding
  • Lexical retrieval
  • Syntactic parsing
  • Holding chunks in working memory
  • Meaning negotiation and construction

Workshop 2 - Strategies for Maximising and Optimising the Use of Curriculum Time by Working with Human Forgetting Rates

Language teaching is often a race against time: in the very little contact time available, teachers must secure the retention and automatisation of a relatively wide range of vocabulary, structures and skills sets. To best tackle this challenge, MFL teachers must have at least a basic understanding of the key cognitive challenges that language teaching and learning pose to their students.

During the second workshop, Gianfranco will provide a concise research-based account of how the human brain processes, retains and retrieves L2 vocabulary and grammar. Giancarlo will also suggest effective ways to maximise teaching and learning time by:

  • Embedding ILRs (Implicit Learning Routines);
  • Teaching high - surrender -value functional chunks and
  • 'Smart' recycling
