Careers & Enterprise

At Harris Academy Chafford Hundred, we believe a high quality Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) programme increases the aspirations and achievements of every student. From year 7, children are exposed to careers and work- related information that develops their sense of enquiry not only about careers and higher/further education but also about their individual skills and aptitudes. The careers programme aims to raise aspirations, broaden horizons and break down stereotypes, to further embed the spirit of our Academy vision as “A School For The Future.”

Inspirational links with external organisations

We collaborate closely with a large variety of organisations, agencies, universities, employers, and apprenticeship/traineeship providers to coordinate a rigorous careers programme that offers our students the most up to date information for their future pathways.

Personalised Guidance

We offer one-to-one meetings with our experienced careers adviser, participate in a wide variety of key career related events, and have integrated careers education into the curriculum to ensure students are continually exposed to the wide variety of options available to them.

Our Careers  Leader is Mrs A Emerson-Morris who can be contacted at a.emerson@harrischaffordhundred.org.uk

Our Careers Advisor is Ms Deborah Oke who provides independent and impartial advice to all students. Parents can arrange an appointment for their son/daughter via email, she can be contacted at Deborah.Oke@harrisfederation.org.uk

Our Careers Journey

Careers education at HACH is a planned and considered 7 year journey to allow every student to access their potential and prepare for success. At each Key Stage, students explore a wide range of options, pathways, employers and higher education providers to inspire them

The careers programme raises pupils’ aspirations. Pupils meet a diverse range of employers and learn about different careers and universities. This enables them to make informed choices about their future.”                            Ofsted, 2024

Preparation for the work of work

Careers education is about inspiration and aspiration as much as advice and employer engagement is a key part of our programme. We have an extensive alumni network that students can engage with to hear first-hand experiences and engage in workplace visits. Students in years 10 and 12 also participate in a period of in-person work experience in a wide variety of environments, which give invaluable insight into the professional world while also broadening their cultural capital. These experiences motivate and inspire students to keep aiming high and strive for success.

Preparation for Next Steps

As times change, so does the need to reflect and deliver important careers information in the most useable and appropriate manner.  All students at HACH have access to Unifrog, an online platform where they can explore a huge range of career pathways, complete personal skills assessments, compare post-16 and post-18 options and track their personal careers journey.

Students and Parents are also encouraged and supported to explore all options at post-14, post-16 and post-18 and provided with resources and access to a range of  external providers to ensure they are fully informed to make the best decisions.

Students also attend careers events in school and across London, through the Harris Federation to hear from a range of providers. They also have the opportunity to visit a range of universities, colleges, scholarship providers and apprenticeship providers who all play a vital role in inspiring success. Our impressive destination data illustrates the aspiration and successful intent that the careers programme instils in each student at HACH.

We also collaborate closer with the Greater Essex Careers Hub to ensure parents and students have access to opportunities in the local area as well as nationally and are fully informed of the local and national labour market.

Student Progression & Destinations

Our students progress into a range of options after Year 11 or Year 13; usually Sixth Form or College, University or Apprenticeships.  They are fully supported with all aspects of their decision making and applications processes

Quality in Careers Standard

At Harris Academy Chafford Hundred, we are dedicated to providing our students with the highest quality of education and guidance. As part of this commitment, we are proud to announce that we are actively pursuing the Quality in Careers Standard award.

The Quality in Careers Standard is the national quality award for careers education, information, advice, and guidance (CEIAG) in schools, colleges, and work-based learning. This award is a testament to an institution's commitment to delivering excellent careers education and preparing students for their future careers.

Our pursuit of the Quality in Careers Standard award is a reflection of our dedication to ensuring that our students are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to make informed decisions about their future. We believe that a strong careers education program is essential in preparing students for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of life.

We look forward to working towards achieving this prestigious award and continuing to provide our students with a high-quality careers education program.

Thank you for your continued support.

How can you get involved as a parent

We know that parents play a crucial role in helping young people to navigate their future choices and we invite you to engage in the careers programme with us. Engaging in parental information evenings and school events is a great way to ensure you have the best information to support your child.

If you have any questions about how we support students and parents with their future choices, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can contact the careers lead: a.emerson@harrischaffordhundred.org.uk

If you have any professional expertise to share with our students, we would love to hear from you. You could assist with:

  • Delivering a career talk to students
  • Volunteering for mock interview days
  • Hosting a stand at our annual careers fair
  • Offering a work experience placement for a student
  • Hosting some students at your place of work for a day

You can also support with having informed discussions with your child about their future options. Here are some free resources that may help with those discussions:

www.apprenticeships.org.uk

  • This is the national site for almost all apprenticeship applications nationwide. You will need to register an account with them (it’s free) but then you can search and apply for apprenticeships that you fancy doing.

www.ucasprogress.com

  • Great site for finding out where the local learning opportunities for post-16 are. Search by course, subject or even provider. So, you could use it to find out if a particular college offered a particular A Level or BTEC, or just look for where the nearest learning provider is that does the course you want.

https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/

  • Lots of useful information, including how to choose careers by using some of the on-line inventories available. Also points you to on-line help and call centres for careers guidance.

www.icould.com

  • Really user-friendly site. The ‘Buzz’ test is especially fun to do and might help reinforce career planning or help you think in a different direction. Great video clips and other careers tools to help young people decide.

www.careersbox.co.uk

  • Great site for videos. It includes lots of people talking about their careers, what brought them into it and what the job is really like. You just choose the career area you’re thinking of and then choose who you would like to listen to. It's very inspirational and the videos are short.

www.notgoingtouni.co.uk

  • As it says, if you’re not thinking about university after Level 3 qualifications then take a look at this site. Not only is it packed with advice about opportunities but it also carries live vacancies. Not all the vacancies or opportunities will be in your locality, so you have to decide what to do at that point.

www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship

  • Search online for current apprenticeship vacancies with a link to online applications.

www.stepintothenhs.nhs.uk

  • There are 350 careers in the NHS. Use this website to watch videos, read case studies and learn more about the largest UK employer with over 1.3 million employees.

How can you get involved as an employer

Employers play an essential role in helping young people to navigate their future choices and we invite you to engage in the careers programme with us. Giving young people first hand experience of the world of work and the skills needed to be successful in each chosen field, as well as helping them develop the essential skill of networking, allows them to be more aspirational and see themselves in a future role.

If you have any professional expertise to share with our students and would like to engage with us to support young people, we would love to hear from you. You could assist with:

  • Delivering a career talk to students
  • Volunteering for mock interview days
  • Hosting a stand at our annual careers fair
  • Offering a work experience placement for a student
  • Hosting some students at your place of work for a day
